October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and several retailers at Town Square have stepped up and created products to benefit various organizations dedicated to finding a cure and furthering research. UNLVtickets

Visitors to Town Square will have an opportunity to purchase tickets to upcoming special events, sporting events and performing arts when UNLVtickets sets up shop at the Concierge during. UNLVtickets is the in-house ticketing company for the Thomas & Mack Center, Cox Pavilion, Sam Boyd Stadium and UNLV, providing exclusive ticketing services (Call Center, Internet and Retail Outlets) to Special Events, UNLV Athletics, the UNLV Performing Arts Center, various college events and Student Government. UNLVTickets was established in 2002 to create a new revenue stream for the university and to bring all of the UNLV ticketing needs together under one ticketing system in order to provide a higher level of customer service. Safe Street

Town Square takes on ghosts and goblins this Halloween when Sunny 106.5 FM brings its 19th annual Safe Street to the center on Saturday, October 31, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Children will have a safe place to trick or treat as they go from store to store collecting treats. Activities include Scary-oke sing-a-longs at the main stage, pumpkin decorating contests in Town Square Park, King Putt miniature golf and more. Safe Street is free and open to the public.


 
Watch "Moving Stars and Earth for Water"
Town Square will present “Moving Stars and Earth for Water,” on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. on the big screen in Town Square Park. The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with food samplings from various restaurants at Town Square and Cirque du Soleil activities. The 120-minute broadcast is a global event featuring musical performances by major international artists and the reading of a poetic tale by well-known celebrities. It is part of Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté’s Poetic Social Mission to raise awareness through artistic illustration of the humanitarian struggles and solutions associated with water. The event will take place simultaneously on October 9 in Montreal, Moscow, Santa Monica, New York City, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Marrakesh, Sydney, Osaka, Tampa, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, Paris, London and the International Space Station. For 120 minutes, the earth will gaze up at the stars and resonate to the rhythms of artists and world-renowned figures who will demonstrate their commitment to water and pay tribute to this vitally important natural resource.




 
Wine Walk
The final 2009 Wine Walk takes place on October 3 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. The walk will showcase a variety of food and wine throughout Town Square Park and feature 20 different wines for sampling. The cost is $30 per person. The walks are organized by New Vista Community, a local charity committed to providing equal opportunities and support to intellectually challenged people of all ages so that they may experience life to the fullest. Storytime in the Square
Storytime in the Square is back and taking the Children’s Park by storm every Wednesday at 11 a.m. Children can enjoy live readings from their favorite classic books, fairy tales and more by local storytellers. Theory of Flight on October 16
Las Vegas rising rockers Theory of Flight () will perform live at their day-long Within Reach record release event taking place on Saturday, October 16 at Town Square. The band was recently nominated for Hollywood Music in Media Awards, a.k.a the HMMA’s  ()for category for its up tempo “Can’t You See.” The band   was formed in 2007 by frontman Beau Hodges, lead guitarist Vince Casas and bassist Joey McMahon. Vince had the vision of making TOF a six piece unit from the start, and soon added Tyler Williams (drums), Stephen Goodrum (rhythm guitar) and John Colombo (key) to the fold.TOF has been cultivating a growing fan base with live performances at hotspots such as the House of Blues and Hard Rock Hotel.



 

Classic Volkswagen Show on October 3
More than 250 classic Volkswagens from around the country will be on display at Town Square on October 3 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. courtesy of Las Vegas Classic VW’s. Awards will be presented for the best cars in various categories.



 
Positively Kids Duck Derby October 24
Ten thousand yellow rubber ducks will be swimming in the pond at Town Square Park to kick off the Positively Kids Duck Derby on October 24 from noon to 4 p.m. Ducks can be adopted for $5 at the center that day to raise money to build Nevada’s first pediatric skilled nursing facility. The Foundation for Positively Kids is a Las Vegas based non-profit organization that takes care of medically fragile and disabled children (birth to 18 years of age) in Clark County by providing in-home skilled care (RN, LPN, CNA) as well as providing specialized services such as speech, physical, occupational, horseback riding therapy, music and massage therapy. Positively Kids also provides respite services for the families.

 Center Happenings: Wellness Fair
Fitness and fashion come together for the first-ever Wellness Fair at Town Square on Oct. 10-11. The Wellness Fair will showcase fitness demonstrations, health and educational vendors,the USA Yoga Federation Championships on Oct. 11 and more. Mark your calendar for Family Fitness Sundays on Oct. 18, 25 and November 1 at 10 a.m., 11 a.m and noon featuring free fitness classes such as yoga and zumba. The Fair is the first phase of the new Fitness in the Square Program slated for the spring and led by certified instructors that will feature weekly group exercise in the park, a walking course route and community events. Fitness in the Square is a led under the sports medical direction of Dr. Randa Bascharon and operated as a public charity under the 501c3 status of Yogis Unite, Inc., an instrument of unification for those involved in yoga and other physical art forms.

Make a Mark on Breast Cancer
Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is inviting the community to support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October by having the name of a breast cancer survivor or someone lost to the disease, etched into a metal sculpture of the foundation’s signature pink ribbon. Local artist Scott Sandoval is creating a 5’6” x 4’ sculpture to support the cause. The deadline it enter a name is December 20, 2009. The finished sculpture with the etched names of breast cancer survivors or those lost to the disease will be unveiled in early 2010. Names can be reserved for a $25 donation by calling 702-822-2324 or downloading an entry form online at www.komensouthernnevada.org. Sandoval has created more than 100 sculptures in four years. His career began in 2003 when he donated a kidney to his daughter. His appreciation for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, inspired him to build a four-foot high abstract red metal kidney sculpture which is prominently displayed in the hospital lobby. Proceeds go to the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, which plays a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer.

Whole Foods Market is offering a 16-week cooking series every Tuesday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. through December, just in time for holiday entertaining.
